About the Cumberland Off-Road Club
A non-profit public benefit corporation
Cumberland Off-Road (COR) is an informal, family-oriented four-wheel drive (4WD) club based in the Cookeville/Sparta area of Middle Tennessee, and its members come from throughout the Upper Cumberland. COR was founded by a small group of 4WD enthusiasts to support OHV recreation in the region and to unite the increasing number of local trail users in an effort to preserve the sport. COR is also a member of the United Four Wheel Drive Association (UFWDA), whose members include off-road clubs from across the nation, and the Southern Four Wheel Drive Association (SFWDA), whose members include more than one thousand four-wheel drive enthusiast families across the Southeast.
COR club meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. Monday business meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. at John Lowery's shop in Sparta (2777 Sullivan Knowles Road, Sparta). COR will typically hold a trail ride on the first Saturday of the month.
Membership dues are $50 per calendar year and should be paid by the September business meeting. COR membership dues include membership to SFWDA and the UFWDA and entitle COR members to the quarterly publications from both organizations.
COR members are devoted to sharing and promoting the enjoyment of responsible off-road recreation, and the club was founded on that idea. We attempt to fulfill that principle through the following goals:
· Educating others on how to make their off-road adventures more enjoyable.
· Encouraging “tread lightly” principles for off-highway vehicle (OHV) use in Tennessee.
· Increasing public awareness of the need for a managed OHV program in Tennessee.
· Actively participating in the preservation and conservation of our available public lands and trails.
· Encouraging the opening of new areas for public access, motorized recreation.
· Making our Tennessee state officials aware of our sport and our concerns for the future of the sport.
Along with club membership comes responsibility, a responsibility to educate others about our sport and help to promote proper off-road trail use and etiquette. All members must adhere to the bylaws of COR as well as these basic guidelines:
· Members must be willing to HAVE FUN!
· Littering will not be tolerated on the trails or in any other fashion. This includes cigarette butts!
· Alcohol use is not permitted on club trail rides.
· Illegal drug use is prohibited at any time and will result in immediate membership termination.
· Respect all other trail users so they can also enjoy their sport.
· Keep in mind that we are a family club, and our activities are family related.
Becoming a member of COR will also provide the opportunity to develop friendships with other off-road enthusiasts who have been enjoying 4WD sport recreation for more than a decade. Club members work together with the Forest Service and other clubs in the southeast to preserve our trails, forests and public lands. Our efforts help keep the sport of 4WD recreation available to the public. Members are expected to promote a positive image of the sport and are also encouraged to support proper land management and conservation and participate in trail cleanups and maintenance days.
Anyone who has a passion for Off-Road sport recreation and is willing to be active in the club and is welcome to join. Those who are new to the sport are always welcome. Club members’ vehicles range from completely stock to extremely built, and our trail rides vary from scenic with a low level of difficulty to very difficult. The trail rides offer an opportunity for fun no matter what level of difficulty and nearly always lead to exciting stories to share at a campfire.
Camping also plays a major role in the 4WD sport, and many COR members find that aspect as enjoyable as the trail rides. A few camping trips will be scheduled for the club each year.
The benefits of membership in COR are numerous. Members learn of trails that they never knew and meet new friends to share the trails with. Membership creates a strong, unified voice to support OHV use in Tennessee, and members also receive updates on what is happening, both environmentally and politically, in the 4WD community in Tennessee and across the nation. Most importantly, members have a good time!
