We had a great day at Windrock. It was myself, John Lowery in his diesel
Chevy, Gabe Choate in his Ranger, Nick Cooper in his truggy, Elliot in his 1
ton Wrangler, and Kelly in an FJ Toyota (old one not new one). We started the
day out on 16, we were making good progress until we got to one of the steep
down hill sections. It was very slick and Elliot 's Jeep slid sideways.
It then slid off a 4 foot drop-off and flopped on it's side. It was an
extremely hard flop. It busted the rear window off the hard top and bent the
front fender. It took about 30 minutes to right him and we were off and
running again. We stopped at the waterfalls and had lunch. From there we
finished 16 and headed to rattle-rock to let some of the guys see what the
really bad stuff looked like. From there John, Nick, and I headed on and Gabe,
Elliot , and Kelly decided they had enough and headed home. We went on up to
the windmills and checked that out, it was awesome. We then went to the top
of trail 3 and came back down it - had a couple of steep ledges and a cool
creek crossing. The trail must have originally been a railroad bed for
hauling coal, there was tracks laying to the side and some old rail carts. We
finished 3 and headed to trail 39. When we got to the start of the trail a
bunch of souped up Volkswagon buggies were sitting there. They saw what I was
driving (lil Toyota), and said we could not make it. Me being the type of
person I am we continued on. I did have to get Nick to give me a tug up one
hill. About half way around the trail we met more broken-down buggies and
they warned us you won't make it, don't even try. So we continued on anyway.
Within a 1/2 mile of the end we got to a stump that had slid off the bank into
the road. Nick and I could go around it but John could not squeeze through.
John decided to get in front of the broken buggies and head out. Nick and I
just had to see how rough it would get so went to the end of the trail. I
wish the buggies could have saw the Yota's at work. Nick made it look like
nothing, I struggled but the 'lil Yota kept going. We got within sight of the
end and Nick said he knew he could make it but thought he would have to winch
me, so we decided to go back and make sure John had made it out. It was a
wonderful day, great weather, great guys to ride with and almost no mechanical
difficulties; great, great, great day in the woods. I pulled in my driveway
at 10:00 pm - one of the best trail rides I have ever been on.
